A Holographic Display for a Product Launch: What It Takes

Nobody sells a true hologram at a product launch. What gets sold under that name is one of four things: a persistence-of-vision fan array, a Pepper's ghost foil reflection, a transparent LED panel, or a projection onto a haze or scrim. Each is a two-dimensional illusion with a viewing cone, a brightness floor and a sightline requirement. Choose by room, not by render. The wrong choice looks spectacular in the preview file and flat from row seven.

Four technologies, four different rooms

Holographic fan arrays are LED blades spinning fast enough to paint an image in the air. A single unit is typically 60 to 100 centimetres across and they tile into grids. They read as genuinely floating because there is no visible surface, and they work in moderate ambient light. Their limits are content and safety. Anything with a light background looks like a solid glowing plate, the effective resolution is low, and a spinning blade array needs a physical guard and a standoff distance from the audience.

Pepper's ghost is a tensioned foil at 45 degrees reflecting a bright source from below or above. It gives the cleanest illusion of a solid object in space and it can hold a life-size presenter. It also demands the most from the room: a deep stage, a black surround, tightly controlled ambient light and an audience seated inside a viewing cone of roughly 60 degrees. Anyone outside that cone sees the foil. Anyone above it sees the source. In a hotel ballroom with chandeliers and windows, it will not hold.

Transparent LED is the practical choice for most launches. A 3.9 to 7.8 millimetre pitch panel with 40 to 70 percent transparency lets the physical product sit behind the graphics, which is often the real objective. It is bright enough for a lit room, it has no viewing cone problem, and it fails gracefully. It is also the least magical of the four. Projection onto haze or a scrim is the cheapest and the most fragile, because haze density drifts with air conditioning and any breeze destroys the effect mid-cue.

Decisions that set the budget

Ambient light level

Measure the room with the house lights at show state, not empty and dark. Foil and haze methods need the room near black. Transparent LED and fan arrays tolerate a lit ballroom.

Audience geometry

Map the widest and the closest seat. If the seating fan exceeds the viewing cone, the illusion breaks for a measurable share of the room and no amount of content fixes it.

Rigging and load

Foil frames and LED grids carry real weight and need certified rigging points or ground support. Venue load limits in older Indian ballrooms are often the binding constraint, not the budget.

Content on black

Every method except transparent LED renders black as invisible. Content has to be authored on true black with glowing or emissive subjects. Repurposed brand films almost never work unmodified.

From reveal concept to cue

  1. Site survey with a lux meter

    Record ambient light at the display position, ceiling height, rigging capability and the seating plan. This survey decides the technology, and doing it late is the most common cause of a rebuild.

  2. Prototype one shot at scale

    Build a single ten-second sequence and view it on the actual display type at the actual size. Small-scale previews lie about resolution, brightness and how black reads.

  3. Lock the reveal cue with the show caller

    Define the exact lighting state, audio bed and timecode for the reveal. Holographic methods depend on the room going dark on cue, so the lighting desk owns half the effect.

  4. Rehearse the failure path

    Decide in advance what the operator does if a fan unit drops, the foil ripples or a media server stalls. Usually that means a pre-rendered flat version ready on a second output.

What usually goes wrong

Expectation is the first failure, and it is set in the sales meeting. A client who has seen a science fiction film expects a free-floating, walk-around, three-dimensional object. Every commercially available method is a flat image with a clever context. Show them the honest reference early, on video shot from a real audience position rather than from the one perfect camera angle. The second failure is sightlines. A launch is usually specified from a stage plan, then reseated by protocol on the day when VIP tables are moved forward or to the side. Those moved seats often sit outside the viewing cone. Fix the display geometry to the final seating plan and put a physical marker on the floor showing where the cone ends.

Ambient light kills more of these than hardware does. Daytime launches in atria and glass-fronted venues, common in UAE malls, will defeat any foil or haze method regardless of projector output. Blackout is not always achievable and drape adds cost and rigging late in the schedule. The third one is content on black. Editors deliver a beautiful film with a white studio background, it arrives three days out, and it reads as a glowing rectangle rather than a floating object. Specify the black-background requirement in the first brief, review a test frame at week two, and hold a hard content lock at least four days before the show so there is time to re-grade. Finally, fan arrays are mechanical devices in a public space. They need guarding, a standoff, and someone whose job is to stop the crowd reaching in.

Common questions

Which method looks the most like a real hologram?

Pepper's ghost, by a clear margin, because the reflected image appears to occupy physical space on the stage. It is also the most demanding. It needs stage depth, a dark surround and controlled seating, so it suits theatre-style launches rather than open atria.

Can we put the actual product inside the effect?

Yes, and it is usually the strongest version. Transparent LED in front of a plinth, or a Pepper's ghost with the physical unit revealed behind the foil, lets graphics wrap the real object. It also removes the need for the display to carry the whole reveal.

How early do we need the content?

Lock content four days before the show at minimum. Holographic methods require black-background authoring, brightness adjustment and a viewing test at full scale. Late delivery removes the ability to correct any of those, and correction is where the quality lives.
