AR Photobooth vs Green Screen vs 360 Booth: Which to Pick

Every event brief eventually reaches the same line: a photobooth, something people will share. Three formats compete for that line. An AR photobooth composites a live effect around the guest with no physical backdrop. A green-screen booth keys a printed or projected background behind them. A 360 booth spins a camera around a platform for a slow-motion clip. They are not interchangeable. They differ in how many guests an hour they serve, how much floor and ceiling they need, how they fail, and what the brand actually gets to publish afterwards. This is the comparison we run before quoting.

The three formats in one paragraph each

AR photobooth. A camera, a controlled key light and a computer running real-time person segmentation. The guest stands in ordinary light; the software separates them from whatever is behind and composites an animated layer, brand furniture and effects live on screen at 30 frames a second. No green cloth, no matte to fix. One session emits several assets at once: a square, a vertical crop, a short loop, a strip.

Green-screen booth. The classic chroma-key setup: an evenly lit green backdrop, a camera and software that replaces the green with a still or video background. The hardware is cheaper and the technique is understood by any AV crew. It depends on the screen being lit flat and the guest not wearing green, and it is a photo pipeline first and a video pipeline second.

360 booth. A circular platform for one to four guests with a camera on a motorised arm that orbits them for a few seconds. The output is a single slow-motion video, usually with an overlay and music. It is the most theatrical of the three and the slowest, because every session includes boarding, a safety brief and the spin itself.

Comparison at a glance

  • Throughput per lane. AR: 180 to 240 guests an hour with two staff and a QR delivery flow. Green screen: 120 to 180, because posing against a fixed background takes direction. 360: 40 to 60, since each session runs 60 to 90 seconds including boarding.
  • Floor space. AR: about 3 m by 3 m including the hold zone. Green screen: 3 m by 4 m, because the backdrop needs distance from the guest to avoid spill. 360: 4 m by 4 m at minimum for the arm's sweep, plus a clear safety margin.
  • Lighting. AR tolerates ambient light if the key light is controlled. Green screen needs the backdrop lit evenly or the edges fringe. 360 needs consistent light through the full orbit, which is hard next to stage lighting.
  • Output. AR: three to five assets per session, ready for feeds in every ratio. Green screen: one composited photo, optionally a GIF. 360: one video, normally in one aspect ratio.
  • Branding. AR layers are original 3D and motion assets, so the brand can sit anywhere in the frame and move. Green-screen branding lives in the background plate. 360 branding is an overlay and a frame.
  • Staffing. AR and green screen: two people per lane. 360: two people at minimum, one of them managing boarding and safety.
  • Failure modes. AR: lighting drift shifts segmentation quality; a locked key light fixes it. Green screen: shadows, wrinkles and green clothing. 360: the arm, the platform and the queue; a motor fault stops the activation.
  • Cost tier. Green screen is the cheapest to hire. AR sits in the middle and rises with custom 3D or game content. 360 costs the most per guest served, because the rig is expensive and the throughput is low.
  • Best for. AR: expos, mall activations and launches, anywhere reach per hour matters. Green screen: budget activations with a strong scene concept. 360: galas, weddings and hospitality moments where the spectacle is the point.

Where each format wins

AR photobooth: reach

When the KPI is content that travels, AR wins on arithmetic: more guests an hour, more assets per guest, and every asset carrying the brand in motion. It also survives difficult venues, because segmentation does not care what is behind the guest.

Green screen: scene concepts on a budget

If the idea is to put the guest on a magazine cover or inside the new showroom, a well-lit green screen does it for the least money. Keep the concept to one or two backgrounds and light the cloth properly; most bad green-screen output is a lighting problem, not a software one.

360 booth: spectacle

For a gala dinner, a wedding or an awards night, the spin is the moment and the queue is part of the fun. Plan for low throughput and a video-only output, and give it a spot where the crowd can watch.

Hybrid lanes

Large activations often run an AR lane for volume beside a 360 platform for the showpiece, sharing one delivery page and one brand kit. The two formats then report as one activation.

How to choose in four questions

  1. What is the number that matters?

    If it is reach, shares or leads captured, choose on throughput and asset count. If it is delight for a smaller group, choose on spectacle.

  2. How many guests arrive per hour at peak?

    Divide by the format's lane throughput and you have the number of lanes, the staff count and the floor space. This is where 360 booths usually fall out of expo briefs.

  3. What does the venue give you?

    Ceiling height, power, ambient light and floor area rule formats in or out before any creative discussion. A 360 arm under a low ceiling is a non-starter, and a green screen next to a stage wash will fringe.

  4. What happens to the content afterwards?

    If the assets feed a campaign, insist on multi-format output, a delivery page with tracked links and a rights-clean pipeline. If they are keepsakes, a single well-made photo or clip is enough.

What the guest experience should feel like

Whichever format you pick, the same three rules decide whether people finish the session and share the result. Cut the choices to one or two. Replace typing with a QR code bound to the session. Keep one person at the front of the lane and one at the back. A 360 booth that ignores these rules queues for twenty minutes; an AR lane that follows them clears a hall.

Does an AR photobooth need a green screen?

No. Modern AR booths separate the guest from the background with real-time segmentation, so they run against a plain wall, a branded backdrop or an open hall. A controlled key light matters more than what is behind the guest.

Can we run AR and 360 together?

What about consent and attendee data?

Every format captures faces, so consent is collected on screen before the session, delivery uses a per-session code rather than typed contact details, and assets are deleted after the retention period agreed with the organiser. This is standard scope for us, not an add-on.
